BGH Auxiliary Receives ‘Values in Action’ Award
At Quinte Health, our people are the heart of everything we do. As the Board of Directors kicked off its first meeting of 2025, they presented this year’s first Values in Action Award—which celebrates an individual or team who embodies our Quinte Health values: Imagine it’s you, We all make a difference, Value everyone, and Stronger together.
Board member Catherine Gosselin-Després had the privilege of presenting the award:
“We are proud to recognize members of the Belleville General Hospital (BGH) Auxiliary for their dedication in reopening their gift shop in its new location, just inside the main entrance of the hospital.
For decades, our four Auxiliaries—the North Hastings District Hospital Auxiliary, the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Trenton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Belleville General Hospital Auxiliary—have operated volunteer-run services such as thrift shops, coffee shops, and gift shops. These operations raise vital funds to support our hospitals and enhance patient care.
The BGH Auxiliary’s gift shop has a long and meaningful history. It first began in the early 1960s as a small merchandise display case in a waiting room. In November 1972, under the leadership of longtime Auxiliary member Selma Bochnek (who continues to volunteer today), the gift shop moved into its first dedicated space.
For nearly 50 years, the shop thrived—until the COVID-19 pandemic. In late 2020, to accommodate our growing oncology department and implement crucial safety measures, the gift shop space was repurposed to support patient care. This was a difficult decision, but the Auxiliary’s understanding, adaptability, and unwavering support made it possible. Gift shop operations were temporarily co-located within the Tuck Shop until a new space could be prepared.
In the face of significant challenges, including pandemic demands, unprecedented patient volumes, and leadership transitions, progress toward reopening the shop took longer than anticipated. Yet, throughout it all, the Auxiliary’s commitment and patience never wavered.
Reopening a gift shop is no small task. It requires organization, coordination, and effort. Volunteer Coordinator Jay Moxness noted the remarkable dedication and pride shown by the Auxiliary members involved. He explained that Convener Jan Raymond has been instrumental, overseeing stock arrangements, implementing modern payment systems, and finalizing training for the team of volunteers. While Jan could not join us today, we extend our heartfelt thanks to her.
We are delighted to welcome Auxiliary President Heather Smith, First Vice-President Paul Reesor, and Retail Director Angela Ford, who are here to accept the Values in Action award on behalf of the Auxiliary.
The reopening of the BGH Auxiliary gift shop is a shining example of leadership, teamwork, and commitment to our hospital and community. Your hard work ensures that this service continues to support patients, staff, and visitors while advancing our shared purpose of Creating Healthier Communities Together. We truly are stronger together.”
