Facing cancer is a journey unlike any other. It can feel overwhelming, isolating, and deeply emotional for patients and their loved ones. Between the medical terms, treatments, and appointments, cancer brings a whirlwind of emotions—fear, anger, sadness, and hope. These emotions can be intense, and talking about them might feel overwhelming or even impossible. For some, writing can provide a safe, private space to process their feelings without judgment.

That’s why Quinte Health Social Workers Sami Lester and Krystle Humphrey are launching a six-week support group called “Journey Through Words”. The concept was researched and created by Wellspring, a national cancer support network. The creative writing group is rooted in concepts from narrative therapy that help patients and caregivers develop a richer understanding of themselves and their strengths.

“Through creative writing, patients can understand themselves better, make sense of their experiences, and maybe find more clarity,” Sami explained. “Often, the act of writing becomes cathartic, helping release built-up emotions and thoughts in a way that feels safe and manageable.”

In the group, participants will be prompted with questions inviting written responses. They will be given 20 minutes of silence to write their thoughts, which can be a welcome space, especially for those who would appreciate being able to process their responses in their native language, if it is not English.

“Although participants will all be connected by having a cancer experience, the group does not actually focus on cancer – it’s about reflecting on participants’ identity, values, strengths, and what truly matters to them,” Krystle added.

“Through reflection, participants will recount moments of courage, endurance, and resilience,” she explained. “The group will also encourage hope and resilience and can be a reminder that they’re more than their illness.”

No previous writing experience is required, and participants are not asked to read what they’ve written, unless they want to. The group will meet for six sessions, and this initial group will be held virtually. Another “Journey Through Words” session is expected to run again in the new year and is open to all cancer patients and/or their loved ones.
