BGHA Volunteers Make a Difference on Two Units

Two Belleville General Hospital Auxiliary (BGHA) volunteers have kindly used their professional connections to help the hospital. Paul Hamelin was an employee of Scotiabank for 41 years. He now volunteers on the Sills 3 Integrated Stroke and Rehabilitation Unit at Belleville General Hospital. Paul knew about Scotiabank’s generosity in supporting the volunteer efforts of their employees and retirees so applied for a $1,000 donation from the bank. Cheryl Hosking, also a former Scotiabank employee, and a BGHA volunteer in the Emergency Department and ICU, did the same.

Cheryl’s funds from Scotiabank have been put towards personal DVD players, radio/CD players and headphones for patients in the ICU.

Paul’s funds from Scotiabank have been used to make purchases on the Sills 3 Integrated Stroke and Rehabilitation Unit. Items include recreational activities such as playing cards, cribbage boards, bean bag toss and Spot It games to keep patients engaged and to help with their therapies, as well as items to assist with patient care, such as oximeters and a tub transfer chair.

“Thank you to Paul and Scotiabank for your gift and for allowing us to go ‘shopping’ with our patients in mind,” said Matt Koornneef, Physiotherapy Team Lead. “The team had fun putting forth ideas and it was a great team building exercise. Your gift not only impacted our patients in a positive way but also our staff. Thanks again for making a big difference to QHC!”

April is Volunteer Month. Although we have fewer active volunteers throughout our QHC hospitals because of the pandemic, we appreciate and miss all of our volunteers! Thank you for all that you do and we hope to see you soon!
