On February 5th, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones announced that the Ontario government is supporting Quinte Health with the planning, design and implementation of a redeveloped and expanded emergency department at Trenton Memorial Hospital.

“Our government is addressing the high demand for emergency care in the Bay of Quinte Region by investing in emergency department infrastructure, so people can continue to connect to convenient care options, close to home,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “Improvements to Trenton Memorial Hospital will mean local families can continue to access the care they need, where they need it, for years to come.”

Through this investment, approximately 6,000 square feet will be renovated and 1,000 square feet will be added to Trenton Memorial Hospital for the new state-of-the-art emergency department. The upgrade will allow the hospital to treat and care for more people, as well as improve patient safety and quality of care through enhanced infection prevention and control measures and dedicated areas for bariatrics and mental health.

“The expansion and modernization of Trenton Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department is critical to serving our growing community and supporting the extraordinary people who care for our patients,” said Stacey Daub, President and CEO, Quinte Health. “This investment underscores our government’s commitment to working with Quinte Health to understand and invest in our hospitals to meet the demands of today and into the future.”

In the past three years, Trenton Memorial Hospital’s emergency department volumes have grown by 25 percent and, in the last year alone, TMH’s inpatient unit has cared for 40 percent more patients.

“As our community grows, we need to ensure that our local health and social care systems grow in lockstep,” said Stacey. “Trenton Memorial Hospital plays a huge role in Quinte Health’s family of hospitals and in the health of the local population and this investment is one important step in strengthening our ability to strongly serve our community. Pride, compassion, teamwork and ingenuity define the TMH team. They are here for our patients, for one another and for our community…. day in and day out, no matter the challenges.”

As a next step, the ministry is working with Quinte Health to complete early planning and design for this project. A construction schedule will be confirmed once future planning is complete and the project is tendered and awarded.
