On April 30th, about 70 members of the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) team, including staff, physicians, board members, and Auxiliary volunteers, were treated to a peek at the new hospital. The event, jointly planned by the PECMH Foundation and Quinte Health, provided our team with a first-hand look at the innovative design and construction of the new PECMH.

The event was held in advance of May 2 – the 10-year anniversary of Quinte Health’s and our partners’ publicly launched efforts to build a new PECMH. Before any message was shared publicly to commemorate the milestone, it was important the PECMH team had the first opportunity to celebrate.

Both Quinte Health and the PECMH Foundation shared updates and had the new hospital designs on display. Quinte Health’s Director of Redevelopment, Facilities and Support Services, James Hildebrand, joined his project team to provide an update on the new hospital build and answer questions about everything from the exposed mass timber design and other sustainable elements, to what to expect during the next steps in the process. Attendees also had the chance to do a virtual walk-through of the new hospital and watch a fly-through video provided by project architects HDR.

Vice President Gina Johar was on hand to highlight technology advancements planned for the new build and explain how these innovations will enhance patient care and efficiency. Shannon Coull, Executive Director of the PECMH Foundation, presented an overview of the Back the Build campaign, outlining the progress made so far and future initiatives aimed at ensuring the campaign’s success.

The open house served as a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the decade-long journey to bring the new PECMH to fruition.

What’s next for the new PECMH? In April, the Request for Proposals (RFP) stage closed for companies to submit their bids to construct the new hospital. Over the next few months, submissions will be evaluated, and a successful proponent is expected to be announced this summer, with construction expected to begin shortly after.  Stay tuned!
